DR. NORA GOLD
Senior Associate

Dr. Nora Gold is a Senior Associate of Weiss International Ltd. Formally, she was an Associate Professor of Social Work at McMaster University. She also was the Scholar-in-Residence and subsequently the Writer-in-Residence at the Centre for Women’s Studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto (OISE/UT). Dr. Gold received her Ph.D from the University of Toronto, and is a certified member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. She has published widely in her areas of special interest, which include cross-cultural communication and issues related to diversity and anti-oppression. A few examples of previous projects:

  • Research that compared two different countries in terms of how their newspapers wrote about people with disabilities, and how the social workers in these two countries decided whether or not to remove an at-risk child from the home.
  • Cross-cultural training program with executives from Israel who planned to purchase assets in Canada.
  • Cultural diversity training for Canadian executives working abroad in multinational contexts.

Dr. Gold has presented at numerous national and international conferences on her work, has appeared in newspapers and on radio as an expert commentator, and is the recipient of a variety of prestigious fellowships and research grants, including two grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and two from the Halbert Centre for Canadian Studies.

In addition to the above, Dr. Nora Gold is the founder and editor of Jewish Fiction .net, a prestigious online literary journal, which publishes Jewish-themed fiction that was either written in English or translated into English from 20 languages, and which has readers in 140 countries. She is also actively involved in community work. Her current involvements include board or advisory council work with two international social enterprise organizations based in the USA and Israel.

Dr. Nora Gold is also a prize-winning author of three books.  Gold’s first book, Marrow and Other Stories, won a Vine Canadian Jewish Book Award and was praised by Alice Munro, who wrote to her, “Bravo!” One of the stories from Marrow was read on Wattpad by a quarter of a million people, and last year three stories from Marrow were published in The Montreal Review, for the first time accessible in digital format. Her second book, the novel Fields of Exile (the first—and to date, only—novel about anti-Israelism in the academe) won the 2015 Canadian Jewish Literary Award, and was acclaimed by Cynthia Ozick, Irwin Cotler, /and Ruth Wisse. Her third book, the novel The Dead Man, received glowing reviews, including in the Los Angeles Review of Books, and won a Canada Council translation grant, resulting in The Dead Man being translated into Hebrew and published in Israel. An excerpt of this novel was also translated into Hungarian and appeared in a prominent literary journal in Hungary.

Dr. Gold also has two books coming out in 2023 – 2024. The first is called 18: Jewish Stories Translated From 18 Languages, which will be published in October 2023 by Academic Studies Press in Boston. (All the works in this anthology were previously published in Jewish Fiction .net.) The second book is two novellas: Yom Kippur in a Gym and In Sickness and In Health, to be published on March 1, 2024 by Guernica (Toronto). Publishers Weekly just gave 18 a wonderful advance review https://www.publishersweekly.com/9798887192062 and Cynthia Ozick wrote about 18: “This is a landmark anthology. Nora Gold is a remarkable pioneer who has my heartfelt admiration.” I anticipate good advance reviews for my novellas, as well, a few months from now.

Dr. Gold has received considerable media attention in the United States, Canada, and Israel both for her books and for Jewish Fiction .net, and she has appeared as a featured guest on podcasts and videocasts based in India, Australia, and the United States. She is also* active on LinkedIn, where she has over 100,000 followers, her popular daily posts often garner more than 100,000 views each, and one of her posts was viewed by over one million people.
